Basic concepts of how to read and interpret blueprint drawings are introduced with a focus on the fundamentals of print reading. Instruction is provided on proper terminology, types of lines and their meanings, orientations, sizing, and dimensions from an applied perspective with an emphasis on foundational requirements needed to be successful at reading and interpreting basic drawings of simple parts used in the fabrication industry.

Subject Competencies and Objectives:

• Use proper terminology of technical drawings for clear communication within the industry
• Recognize types of lines and their meanings
• Interpret drawings according to view orientation
• Understand sizing and dimension requirements

Students learn to read welding blueprints with a focus on developing competency in understanding how to accomplish a weld. Topics include interpreting basic measurements of welding structures on a drawing, differentiating between types of weld joints and types of welds, interpreting welding symbols related to types of weld joints and/or types of welds, determining size and dimensions of weld joints and/or welds specified, and understanding various designs and weld types from welding symbols.
